This past week I was introduced to the exercise of Alla Prima.
We were asked to bring a subject in photo form, a uncomfortably large brush and a limited number of colours to apply to our palette. Easels set up, water set out and the timer began: we had less than three hours to go from a blank canvas to a finished piece.
I've never been more intimidated in my life!
I'm normally such a detail oriented person, easily drawn in by every small wrinkle of clothing or reflection of light. This exercise pushed me well out of my comfort zone and reminded me that it's in those uncomfortable spaces that there is the most room to grow.
Mere months ago a single painting was taking me more than a month to complete.
Who would have guessed that I'd be capable of pulling this off in less than a day?
